Vacation? Out of town?

Short-term Independent Study

There may be situations when you know ahead of time that your student will be absent for 5 or more consecutive school days.  Both planned and unplanned trips out of town may pull students away form school.

In such cases, it is advised that you at least request a short-term Independent Study agreement for your student.  The Attendance Coordinator will advise you if short-term Independent Study is appropriate for your student’s situation.

This Helps Student Attendance

Students may become excessively absent while out of town.  Short-term Independent Study allows students to be absent for 5 to 15 consecutive school days without this time counting as absent days – provided that the student completes school work assigned during this time away.

How to Begin

  • Parents/guardians must initiate short-term Independent Study, through the Attendance Office.  Make your request either by phone or in person.

  • Attendance Office staff will advise you.

  • Your signature is required, but may be given by phone.

  • For COVID-19 quarantine, short-term Independent Study may begin the same day that you provide your signature.

  • In all other cases, you student may begin short-term Independent Study no sooner than the day after you provide your signature – by phone or in person.

To maximize the benefits of short-term Independent Study, make your request with the Attendance Office at least one day prior to your student’s time away.  Earlier requests are preferred.

Start your request for short-term Independent Study by contacting the Attendance Coordinator at 619-628-5864, or visit the Attendance Office in person.  The Attendance Coordinator will advise you if short-term Independent Study is appropriate for your student.  Not all requests are granted.
