The improbable dream of a No. 10 seed became a reality Thursday as the Mar Vista High School girls raced to an early lead and bested top-seeded Valhalla 44-32 to claim the CIF-San Diego Section Division V title at Otay Ranch High School.

The championship is the first girls basketball title in Mar Vista’s 72-year history.

“We started at the bottom and worked our way up,” said Mar Vista star guard Kimberly Curran. “We knew it was possible if we put in the work.”

In order to make submission of any COVID-related verifications (vaccination or testing results) as easy as possible, we have created a new MVHS gmail account. If your student needs to submit either vaccination status or a COVID testing result with Nurse Kelly Debenham, please send a screenshot or copy of your status/results, with your name and birthdate, to:

This will help us to streamline any COVID related documentation and assist you and your student as quickly and efficiently as possible.
